[Lasa] Ecuador

Quito, 1:35 PM. This is a police strike over pay and benefits which according to 
the govt. had already been addressed. Probably some rightist groups are taking 
advantage of the situation, and that could be a danger. The cities are tied up, 
and some looting. Here in Tumbaco outside of Quito the situation is normal.  The 
president is in the hospital of the Police, apparently affected by tear gas. 
Also, he had a knee replacement operation a week ago and that is probably 
another factor. He has stated that the roof of the hospital is under attack, but 
that is not confirmed. 


So far, there is no indication that this is a golpe de estado.  There are 
manifestaciones y contra manifestaciones.
