Hola Ecuatorianistas,

Me ha impresionado el nivel de entusiasmo y solidaridad que mostraron los miembros de nuestra sección en el Congreso de LASA en Lima. Pronto vamos a subir las fotos de la reunión y la recepción al sitio web para que podamos compartir estos sucesos.


1)      Premios de la Sección:

Felicitaciones al ganador del Premio Dolores Cacuango al  Mejor Ensayo sobre Estudios Ecuatorianos: Taylor C. Nelms (University of California, Irvine) por su artículo “The Problem of Delimitation: Parataxis, Bureaucracy, and Ecuador’s Popular and Solidarity Economy” publicado en Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute

Y había dos menciones de honor:

Jean Muteba Rahier (Florida International University) por su trabajo “From Panacea for Harmonious Race Relations to Ideological Tool for Oppression and National Identity Imagination: Reflections from the Andes on Mestizaje through Time and Space”

Kathleen Fine-Dare (Fort Lewis College) por su trabajo "Hidden Histories of Indigeneity in Urban Andean Ecuador: Transubstantiation, Ceremony, and Intention in Quito”
El trabajo de estos expertos ecuatorianistas impresiona y nos asegura del dinamismo y la vitalidad de nuestro campo de estudios. Gracias a todas las personas que nominaron artículos para este premio.


2)      Oportunidades para Colaborar con la Sección:
En nuestra reunión en Lima, solicitamos la colaboración de los miembros en 4 áreas, y algunas personas se ofrecieron para ayudar en trabajo colectivo de la sección. Ya tenemos suficientes voluntarios/as para el comité de premios… ¡Gracias! Pero todavía tenemos tres oportunidades más. Son buenas maneras de involucrarte en la sección. ¿Te animas?

Consejo Ejecutivo: Necesitamos 2 vocales para servir 2 años. Vocales ayudan a hacer decisiones relacionadas con los gastos, los eventos, y las prioridades de la sección. No requiere mucho trabajo, y no se requiere que asistan al Congreso de LASA. Vamos a hacer elecciones electrónicas otra vez este año. Si te quieres ofrecer como candidato/a al puesto de vocal, por favor avísame antes del 25 de mayo.

Comité ad hoc de Medios Sociales: Necesitamos actualizar nuestra página web, y LASA nos ha pedido que exploremos la idea de hacer una cuenta Twitter. Tal vez queremos estar en Facebook… este comité va a promover las actividades y los intereses de la sección en el mundo virtual. (Se buscan 3 personas)

Comité de becas de viaje: Las secciones tienen el derecho de otorgar becas para ayudar con el costo de viajar al Congreso de LASA. En la reunión decidimos que es algo que queremos hacer para facilitar la participación entre los y las ecuatorianistas en el Congreso. El comité tendrá que decidir cuántas becas y el monto de ellas tanto como las reglas de solicitar las becas y los criterios de elegibilidad. (Se buscan 1-2 personas)

3)      Congreso de LASA Barcelona 2018: Como saben, el Congreso del próximo año será en Barcelona (España). La sección, gracias a su crecimiento reciente, tiene derecho a formar dos paneles en el Congreso. En la reunión que hicimos en LASA, se sugirieron algunas ideas muy buenas para los temas de estos paneles. Pero queremos también las opiniones de las personas que no pudieron estar en la reunión. Si tienen algunos temas sobre Ecuador que les parecen interesantes, por favor envíenmelas pronto porque tenemos que decidir sobre los paneles y pasarle esta información a LASA cuanto antes.
Otra cosita: si conoces Barcelona o resides allá, y puedes colaborar con información local en nuestra planificación de las actividades de la sección en el Congreso, por favor, comunícate conmigo.


4)      Noticias/Anuncios:



Está abierta la convocatoria de paneles para el 56º Congreso de Americanistas que será en Salamanca en julio de 2018 (fecha límite para entregar propuestas: 15 de mayo)

También en la Universidad de Salamanca está abierta una convocatoria para presentar propuestas de cursos abiertos de 10 horas de duración. Hay muy pocos cursos sobre Ecuador. http://americo.usal.es/iberoame/?q=node/3174

Hello Ecuadorianists,

I was impressed with the level of enthusiasm and solidarity that the members of our section demonstrated in the LASA Congress in Lima. We will son upload to the website photos of our meeting and reception so that we can share in these events.

1)

                    1) Section Prizes:
Congratualations to the winner of the Dolores Cacuango Prize for Best Article on Ecuadorian Studies: Taylor C. There were also two honorable mentions:

The work of these expert Ecuadorianists is impressive and assures us of the dynamism and vitality of our field. Thanks to all the people who nominated articles for this prize.

        2) Opportunities to Get Involved with the Section:
In our meeting in Lima, we solicited member volunteers in 4 areas, and some people offered to help with the section’s collective work. We already have enough volunteers for the prize committee… Thank you! But we still have three more opportunities open. Will you help out?

Executive Council: We need 2 council members who will serve for 2 years. These representatives help to make decisions related to the section’s expenses, events, and priorities. It is not a lot of work, and does not require that you attend the LASA Congress. We will do electronic elections again this year. If you would like to be a candidate for council member, please let me know before May 25.

Ad Hoc Social Media Committee: We need to update our web page, and LASA has asked us to explore the idea of making a Twitter account. We may want to have a Facebook page… This committee will promote the activities and interests of the section in the virtual world. (We need 3 volunteers)

Committee for Travel Scholarships: Sections have the right to grant scholarships to help cover costs of travel to the LASA Congress. In the meeting we decided that this is something we want to do to facilitate the participation of Ecuadorianists in the Congress. The committee will need to decide how many scholarships and the amount of the scholarships as well as the eligibility criteria. (We need 1-3 volunteers)

        3) LASA Congress Barcelona 2018: As you know, next year’s Congress will be in Barcelona (Spain). The                     section, thanks to some recent growth, has the right to sponsor two panels in the Congress. In our meeting             at LASA, some very good ideas for panel themes were suggested. But we also want the opinions of those             who could not attend the meeting. If you have any Ecuadorian topics  that you think would be interesting,                 please send me these ideas soon, because we will have to decide about panels and give LASA the                         information as soon as possible.



            One more thing: If you know Barcelona well or live there, and can help out with local information as we

            plan our section activities for the Congress, please let me know.



        4) News/Announcements:



The call for panels and proposals is open for the 56th Congress of Americanists that will take place in Salamanca in July 2018 (deadline to submit proposals: May 15th)
