Escribo para compartir los siguientes anuncios. Espero que estén ya empezando a pensar en qué van a proponer como ponencia en LASA 2018, que tendrá sede en Barcelona. Pronto estaré comunicándoles sobre oportunidades para participar en los paneles de la sección.

1) Comité ad hoc de Medios Sociales: Todavía necesitamos más personas para colaborar en este comité. No tienes que ser experto/a en tecnología, sólo tienes que ayudar a generar ideas para nuestro sitio web y para hacer crecer nuestra sección a través de otros medios sociales. LASA tiene una persona encargada de trabajar con las secciones para mejorar su presencia virtual, y también contamos con las habilidades de nuestro fabuloso webmaster, Marc Becker, así que el comité está en buenas manos. 2) Recepción en LASA 2018: He estado conversando con los líderes de la Sección Colombia y la Sección Venezuela acerca de la posibilidad de hacer una recepción en conjunto para LASA 2018. Sería una oportunidad divertida para conocer a colegas con los cuales tenemos muchos intereses en común y podríamos economizar compartiendo los gastos. Queremos hacer una recepción “off-site” porque la recepción en el hotel oficial de LASA en Lima nos resultó muy cara. Si vives en Barcelona o conoces bien la ciudad, y quieres colaborar con ideas de buenos sitios para hacer la recepción, por favor, avísame: erynn.casanova at uc.edu

3) Becas Fulbright: Recibí el siguiente mensaje de una representante de Fulbright.
Fulbright Scholars are selected for their academic merit and leadership potential to teach, research, and exchange ideas. The 2018-19 Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is accepting applications from American academics and professionals until August 1, 2017. 4) Petición de la Sección de Venezuela: El presidente de la Sección de Estudios Venezolanos nos informa de una situación reciente que nos puede preocupar aunque no pertenecemos a su sección. Si hay interés en escribir una carta de parte de nuestra sección de Estudios Ecuatorianos apoyando la petición de la sección Venezuela, podemos tomar una posición colectiva. Abajo verán el mensaje de Vicente Lecuna, presidente de la sección de Estudios Venezolanos, y estoy adjuntando los documentos a los cuales él se refiere.

Queridos presidentes de secciones de LASA

Espero que esta comunicación los encuentre bien. El viernes de la semana pasada la Sección de Estudios Venezolanos recibió una carta del EC de LASA que nos hace saber que la mayoría de sus miembros rechaza nuestra propuesta de resolución sobre el deterioro de la democracia en Venezuela. En lugar de someterla a la votación de todos los miembros de LASA, como indica el reglamento, el EC decidió rechazarla por considerarla ”too partisan and one-sided”.

Le escribo para pedirles por favor que escriban cartas personales a Aldo Panfichi (apanfic at pucp.pe<mailto:apanfic at pucp.pe>), presidente recién electo de LASA, con copia a Milagros Pereyra-Rojas, (milagros at pitt.edu<mailto:milagros at pitt.edu>), directora ejecutiva de LASA, en las que pidan que el EC reconsidere su decisión (si están de acuerdo). También quería pedirles que hagan llegar esta comunicación a los miembros de sus secciones, por favor, para que ellos apoyen nuestra petición, si así lo quieren.

5) Elecciones de la sección: Pronto estaremos haciendo las elecciones de forma electrónica. Ha crecido el interés y el entusiasmo tanto que podemos tener elecciones competitivas para los dos puestos de vocal vacíos. Espero que cuando les llegue el mensaje de votación electrónica, decidan participar y poder así influir en la trayectoria futura de la sección. Gracias a todas las  personas que se han ofrecido como candidatas.

I’m writing to share the following announcements. I hope you are starting to think about what you will propose to present at LASA 2018, which will take place in Barcelona. Soon I will be informing you about opportunities to participate in our section panels.

1) Ad hoc Social Media Committee: We still need more people to help out on this committee. You don’t have to be a technology expert, you just have to help generate ideas for our website and for helping grow our section’s social media presence. LASA has a person in charge of working with all sections to improve their virtual profile, and we are also fortunate to have our fabulous webmaster, Marc Becker, so you will be in good hands. 2) LASA 2018 Reception: I have been in conversations with the leaders of the Colombia and Venezuela sections about the possibility of having a joint reception during LASA 2018. It would be a fun opportunity to get to know colleagues with whom we have many common interests, and we could also save money by sharing the costs. We want to do the reception off-site because the reception in the oficial LASA hotel in Lima was very expensive. If you live in Barcelona or know the city well, and would like to suggest some ideas for reception locations, please let me know: erynn.casanova at uc.edu

4) Venezuelan Studies Section request: The president of the Venezuelan Studies Section has informed us about a recent situation that may concern us although we don’t belong to that section. If there is interest in writing a letter on behalf of our Ecuadorian Studies section in support of the Venezuela section’s request, we can take a collective stand. Below you will see the message from Vicente Lecuna, president of the Venezuelan Studies section, and I am attaching the documents to which he refers.

5) Section Elections: Soon we will be having electronic elections. The interest and enthusiasm in the section has increased so much that we can have competitive elections for the two open council representative seats. I hope that when you receive the message about electronic voting you will decide to cast your ballot and in this way help shape the future of the section. Thank you to all of the people who have volunteered to be candidates.
